2007 Camp Cancelled

It is with great regret that the camp council must announce this news.

The decision was made today, Monday 16th July after a site visit and upon the advice of the farmer who knows the field better than anyone. He told us we would not be able to hold the camp this year.
The field had been flooded a while ago but had drained enough so that at the site visit last Friday we were all confident we could go ahead. Today, after one night of heavy rain, the field is unable to absorb any more water and is again flooded.

Even if the water drained off the field, it is now so soaked that it will flood immediately upon at a mild spell of rain. The ground is now so soft that the heavy equipment, delivery trucks, even caravans will sink into the ground. More rain is forecast.

We are so sorry.

Please refer back to this site where we will post updates as we have them.

Please avoid telephoning us. If you need to do so, please use the following numbers:

Campers bookings - Penny 01904 767764

Self-caterers, Workers and Youth village - 0113 243 7910

Refunds. We will want to be able to refund as much as we are able but have no details yet as we do not yet know the cost of equipment and tent hire cancellation. We will post news here as soon as we have it.

  1. Katie Says:

Please say this is a joke! what if there was a week solid sunshine would that stop it 4rm being cancelled? or booking a different field sum where else?

  2. Penny Says:

Sorry, no joke. If we had solid sunshine it would dry the surface but because the ground is soaked, the next lot of rain would flood the field. Another place not possible at such short notice.

  3. Paul Hather Says:

I’ve been to camp as man and boy. I don’t believe it ! Whats the surf like ? The field’s skim board heaven !! lets tent it with lilo’s

  4. the ledgers Says:

my life is spoilt now, i have no holiday now

  5. Penny Says:

You speak for all of us! Makes us realise how much camp means to us. Let’s believe God will bring something good out of this.

  6. Paul and Sally Hunt Says:

What can we say other than, “today is a very sad day, 30+ years and it is rain that stops us, wow”

  7. A.Newman Says:

This would be my second time 2 Fraisthorpe i realy engoyed it last year and i couldent w8 for this yearr
Nothing could be as bad as last year when all tents fell down!!

  8. Tim Barton Says:

    :-(

  9. Jacqui Says:

As a family we are absolutely devastated by the news we look forward to Fraisthorpe every year. What we need now is a miracle and we know God specailises in them!

  10. alexl Says:

the ground may be too soft but Jesus is our firm foundation and we can trust him. he wouldnt just let a place which has changed so many peoples lives in such a massive way be cancelled cos of rain. i reckon that hes waiting to do something incredible and that the next camp ( be it this year or next, its up to God) is gonna be an incredible experience that will not be forgotten. Keep praying and he will hear us

  11. Luke Evans Says:

As a family we are absolutely gutted, like everyone we look forward to camp all year. Would it not have been possible for camp to have been shortened to 1 week if the weather had improved. We sympathise with all the leaders who have already put so much work in.

  12. Tim C Says:

It really is a sad day, but knowing the team - I know that this decision will not have been made lightly, and will disappoint them as much as – if not more than anyone else. Thanks for all the hard work guys and persevering with trying to make it happen – and we know your hard work will have to continue – even though camp doesn’t!
There is a sense of loss at this time - but we know God has a way of bringing beauty from ashes - and for me - I think a year worse than last year would have made camp more difficult to continue than letting the ground lie fallow for a year.
The event of Fraisthorpe I will miss - but far more will be the fun, conversations, catching up & quality time with people - and the weather can’t stop that - just make it that I have to make more of an effort for it to happen!

  13. Katie Says:

Whats the latest you can cancel the equipment? God could still proform a mirical yet!!!

    xxx

  14. Karl Jones Says:

I’ve been going to Fraisethorpe since I was 9, I’m now 36 married with 3 children. Fraisethorpe has a very special place in our hearts. To hear that it has been cancelled has gutted us as a family. It’s the one place once a year where we just love to be. The fellowship, blessings & refreshing Fraisethorpe brings is indescribable. We will deeply miss being at Fraisethorpe this year. May Jesus continue blessing all thos involved in camp who have been affected by this sad news.

  15. Kristel Says:

Is there any hope for the second week, if its dry from now to the 3rd August?

I’m booked for the first week n praying for a miracle that camp will be on :-) xxx

  16. Penny Says:

Sorry Luke, Katie & Kristel, that was the latest we could have cancelled. It would be too late to order equipment again. We trust in God and believe He can bring good out of bad.

  17. amanda watson Says:

Wow what a shock the first time in 41 years its cancelled,i don`t believe it,but God does,Hey guys and dolls God must have a plan why and we must be patient only 52 weeks to next year…..

  18. Laura Bell Says:

I was gutted when I heard the news and even though I feared a repeat of last years events, I wouldn’t take it back. It was an experience, and one which brought us all together. Well, at the moment I feel like my only chance of a holiday this year has gone and that the weather will pretty much stay the same to even attempt to make the most out of Huddersfield, sigh. However Gods ways are better than our ways and His thoughts are better than our thoughts so I must trust that He will bring something good out of this….and maybe a few days of sunshine pleeeese! Bring it on! Blessings to you all x

  19. T.J Says:

No way i miss my m8s to much. Penny make something happen. Can we have a massiv get to gether or something. PRAY PRAY GUYS please god bless T.J.

  20. Ruth Says:

I think we are going to Faith Camp in Peterborough from the 28th for one week. It won’t be the same but the children were really looking forward to camp so it should be some consolation. Hope to see you all next year.

  21. Tim Barton Says:

I don’t know why you’re all complaining about the weather. It’s been over 30º for the past week! ;-)

    (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

  22. Graham Says:

As a family we are unbelieveably upset, but you have done the right thing cancelling. We live in Driffield, and have spent this afternoon in Bridlington where there was a very heavy thunder storm. All the roads to Filey (6 miles away from Brid) are closed with floods.

  23. Liz Cremer Says:

Like everyone we are really disappointed as we have received so much from the last two years at camp. I was already disappointed at having to miss a chunk in the middle due to my brother’s wedding but also very worried about the prospect of waking up in a pool of water if it rained just one night ( as happens when the ground gets waterlogged). Its really good that a live set event has been able to be arranged and am praying that lives will be changed at this. Any thoughts on anywhere where we might be able to arrange some sort of big day event in a central location? Also out of interest, filey has cut off due to floods today. Looking forward to next year with great anticipation!

  24. The Brooke Family Says:

Like everyone else we are devastated at the cancellation of camp but understand the reasons and that the decision would not have been easy. We only get one holiday each year & really look forward to going.
However, we are really worried that this web site seems to be the only way anyone will know about the cancellation. I only have access to the web while at work and would not have thought to look if I had not recieved a txt from a friend who had seen the site and let me know. Surely there must be others who do not have this technology and will turn up to find an empty field. I really feel that everyone who booked should be contacted either by letter or phone to prevent this from happening. No one has officially contacted us yet.
We pray that God will bless everyone involved with camp. We will miss you all & look forward to next year, God willing.

  25. Penny Says:

Thanks Brooke Family. Yes it is sad news. Regarding letting people know, don’t worry we currently have people in Leeds and York going through the complete list of those booked in (and over 100 workers) and telephoning them. We still have not got through the whole list yet even though we started on Monday. Thankfully emails and texts have helped in many cases as people have passed the news on. Now that you have found it, keep checking with this website as this is now our main means of getting news out to everyone.

  26. stewart an emma wheadon Says:

hi guy’s, camp not on what a blow, it will just mean we will have more to chat about next year. if you want some good news i would like to say that we had a baby girl on the 3/07/07 8lb 8oz called Amelia Grace, would like to thank everybody that prayed re the whole baby thing, (you all know who you are) this would of been her first year at camp and now some of you will not see her until next year when she will be 1 year old but we will all see each other soon, only 365 sleeps till next one
    :-)

  27. Paul W Says:

Well Fraisthorpe is an amazing camp, and at the end of the day God is everywhere not in just some field in yorkshire. God can change your life in your own home, bedroom, ect. Yeah it is disappointing as a lot of us do see it as a holiday and a break from everything. But as people have said, good will come from this, it always does. God has a plan and purpose for everything. Look at what has happened in Filey, God is protecting us, and seeing the state of the cliff due to erosion who knows what could have happened had the weather got even worse when we were to be at camp. Just remember, there is next year, yeah its a long wait, but its going to be worth it and it will make you appreciate Fraisthorpe a lot more. God does this sometimes to make us realise we can’t take things for granted.
On a final note, appreciate all the work the leaders do, because without you guys, camp would not be possible.

  28. dave julie and joe pick Says:

oh no what will dave do no cooking for two weeks no kebabs. Maybe God says we have eaten too many kebabs these past few years and need to rest our tummies. All of us are gutted that there is no camp as we love being there and meeting everyone and seeing what God does in so many different ways, I even bought some bright pink wellies, never mind i’ll wear them next year hopefully not. Well don’t dream of kebabs too much see you next year

  29. Stu Says:

As a ’sound’ member of the Original Liveset team at Fraisthorpe. Sadly it’s been 7 years since I was last at camp but I still follow everything that goes on.
I can only echo what so many people have already said. God is going to make next year’s camp, one not to be missed!
God Bless ALL those who work so hard, not just for the weeks of camp in July/August, but throughout the rest of year in preparation

  30. Eric & Miriam Umpleby Says:

We were camp workers for over 20 years from the 1970s and all our family grew up (as it were) at Fraisthorpe. We have seen marquees blown down more than once, violent thunderstorms and winds and water standing in tents and running through the marquee but never the event cancelled.
It is a total shock and let’s pray that all the youngsters who are ‘missing out’ on their holidays this year will receive a ‘double portion’ from God. He is still in control. Praise His Name.

  31. Dawn, Hannah & Christine Says:

We are truly gutted that camp is cancelled, but we understand why as we live in the area and have experienced the damage all around us. And we know it wasn’t a lightly made decision. It has never happened before in the 45 years of camp been open, and we know because my grandparents were workers on the 1st camp ever.
We will miss our fraisthorpe family greatly and our time with God. This year will not be the same, but we are sure God has a plan and a bigger picture for us all as we continue to trust in him. The fellowship, blessings and refreshing Fraisethorpe brings is indescribable and we will deeply miss Fraisethorpe as it holds a very special place in our hearts. God Bless you all!!

  32. matfromdarlo Says:

I went to fraisthorpe on saturday the 5th of august with some of the darlo people. The field was dry and there was only a small wet muddy bit in the corner of the field where the youth village would have been. I reckon camp would have got away with it if they did decide to carry on, oh well. Theres nothing at southshore because the arcade has closed down and there aren’t any rides- its all got a bit delapodated. Having said that in brid there still on refurbishing the spa building and there is a wheel (like the london eye) on the pier where the rides are. Still a good day out if you haven’t got far to go!

  33. Heather Carr Says:

    God knows best.
With everyone else, Peter and I were devastated at camp being cancelled………but it was right to cancel.
As always, good comes from bad. I know that Peter and I feel refreshed from a different sort of holiday. Being with friends from camp who could come and stay with us and us not having to rush off to work or sleep. (Peter gets up very early to cook breakfast.) I am sure that the camp committee and all who have worked hard to get camp running, will benefit from this “gap year”. I know I already feel excited about what God can do during camp 2008. I have missed seeing all our camp family, but God bless you all. He is allowing us to come in 2008 with renewed energy.

  34. Gail Murray Says:

At 12 I went to my first ‘camp’; that year my tent was one of the only tents not to blow down or be flooded; I said I would never go again. That was 15 years ago and out of those years I’ve been to 12 Camps. I was so sorry to hear that Fraisthorpe had to be cancelled as it has been such a big thing in my life. It was at Fraisthorpe that I first felt called to be a missionary and 8 years as a Power Point Leader meant I was prepared for everything God had in store for me. I’ve missed not being able to go these last 2 years. Here’s to the field in which you should never be without a mac and wellies!

  35. Vivienne Simpson (Sunderland) Says:

I attended my first Camp aged 11, over 30 years ago & even in that first year made life-long friends. For over 20 years I attended with my family both as a camper and worker. We often went the week before camp to help set up & my mam was, at various times, nurse and ’shopper’. So, we know the hard work and preparation that goes into making Fraisthorpe the special place it is. We have been priviledged to be day visitors in recent years after my mam’s health made sleeping under canvas impossible & have seen that the great work continues. God Bless all of you who have worked so hard & then been forced to cancel and those of you who must have been so disappointed to miss such a special holiday. I ask, though ,that you all remember Robin & Mary, at the farm, who find it so difficult when weather like this strikes & affects their precious crops. We still maintain contact with them and visit whenever possible and we ask that you will remember them in your prayers, that God will bless them during these difficult days.

  36. The Darlo Gs Says:

We were there on the 4th August 07 for the day, we could tell there had been a lot of water of the field. We looked around the empty site and as we stood on the cliff a cold breeze came in from the east. The wind whistled the word 2008 in our ears. So… we will be there, cars ready, tent pitched, guns cocked and all systems go.
